Manny Machado’s Lack of Stolen Bases Cost Him a Top-3 AL MVP Finish in 2016

Major League Baseball is full of young superstars, and Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado deserves to be included in such an elite group. After all, he just earned his second consecutive top-five finish in the American League MVP race.

Finishing fifth behind Mike Trout, Mookie Betts, Jose Altuve and Josh Donaldsonis nothing to be ashamed of, but was there a way he could’ve further distinguished himself to become a finalist?

The answer to that question is yes.

Looking at Machado’s 2015 and 2016 statistics, it appears he experienced nearly identical performances, except for one glaring difference.

Baltimore Orioles Have Been Treading Water, but Look More Equipped for a Playoff Run

For a team that entered the 2016 MLB All-Star break with a 51-36 record, it can be viewed as disappointing to go 15-15 since returning to action like the Baltimore Orioles have. However, manager Buck Showalter and his coaching staff should actually be viewing it as progress based on how they got there.

One of baseball’s best and one of baseball’s worst

Throughout the 2016 season, Baltimore has proved a lot of people wrong (including myself). Sure, they started the year on a nine-game winning streak, but we all know fast starts don’t always produce playoff-caliber teams once the calendar flips to August and September.

For standing the test of time during the first three-and-a-half months, the organization can thank its offense and bullpen, while shaking its head at the rotation.

Many loved watching the Orioles hit, but very few enjoyed watching them pitch – at the beginning of games, at least. Starters combined to post a 29-28 record in the first half with a 5.15 ERA, which was third worst in the majors. They also didn’t last very long, with their 470 innings pitched ranking last out of 30 teams.

 Daily Matchups for 7/26/2016

Pitcher

STUD

Noah Syndergaard- Thor has absolutely dominated the Cardinals in the 1 start he had against them. He held them to a .067 BA (1 for 15) with 5 strikeouts and 4 groundouts. He is the best pitcher on the slate in my eyes. We are projecting Thor around 45- 50 FP today. This is obviously a play from yesterday as this game got postponed until today.

Chris Tillman- I absolutely love Tillman here tonight against the Rockies. He’s held them to zero hits in 15 ABs with 9 strikeouts. Tillman comes into this matchup with 127 IP, 104 hits, 48 BBs, 108 Ks, a 3.18 ERA, and 14 Wins tied which is tied for the ML lead. He’s coming off a terrific outing against the Yankees where he pitched 7 innings allowing 4 hits while striking out 7. He ended up with 51 FPs. Tillman has lasted at least 7 innings in his last 4 games and should be able to do the same again tonight.

MID RANGE

Marcus Stroman- He hasn’t faced the Padres much, but he has held them to 1 hit in 9 ABs with 3 Ks. The Padres struggle against RHP and Stroman is coming off his best outing of the season against Arizona where he lasted 8 innings, giving up 8 hits, with no walks and 6 Ks, the W and 51 FP on FD. I could see a similar outing out of him again tonight.

Steven Wright- This is more of a GPP option as he can easily give up too many runs to help a cash game. Wright has only seen the Tigers’ bats 10 times and has given up 3 hits but he is coming off his best game of the year where he pitched 8 innings, allowing only 4 hits, 1 walk, and 9 Ks against Minnesota and he took the win and 60 FP. He’s now got 4 straight wins.

VALUE

Sonny Gray- This should be an under-owned GPP play tonight. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s less than 5% owned. Gray has struggled this season with 101 IP, allowing 114, 38 walks, 80 Ks, and a massive 5.49 ERA. He’s actually dominated the Rangers in his career to a tune of .197 BA (29 for 147) with a 19.3 K% and 31 Ks and 4 HRs. I think he could be the sneaky play of the day.

Ervin Santana- Here’s another sneaky play that has a great matchup tonight. Santana gets to face the Braves who he has had success with. He’s held the current Braves’ roster to a .219 BA (25 for 114), with an 18.9 K%, 23 strikeouts and 22 groundouts but he has given up 6 HRs. I like him to be a sneaky pick.

Daily Matchups for 7/9/2016

Pitcher

STUDS

Max Scherzer-  Easily the top pitcher on the day. Mets haven’t been hitting well of late. Should get plenty of strikeouts and a shot at the W.

Carlos Martinez- Brewers have combined to hit 13-56 of Martinez, and are one of the worst offenses vs. RHP’s this season.

MID RANGE

Danny Salazar- Right  now the Yankees offense is a hot mess.  Only down fall here is they don’t strike out much, which limits his upside. More of a GPP play here.

Lance McCullers- McCullers has great strikeout numbers but at 4 walks per 9, it runs that pitch count up in a hurry  that being said, a matchup with Oakland could offer some nice fantasy value.

VALUE

Rick Porcello- Only there Rays really have good match ups vs. the Boston righty, but the Rays as a whole have been horrible this season vs. righties. Porcello is in play in cash and GPP for  me today.

Schoop brothers united

For the first time in history, Jonathan and Sharlon Schoop will be on the same MLB squad.
The Nederlandsehonkbalsite.com announced the news today.

For two seasons, Sharlon was part of Baltimore’s AAA team, the Norfolk Tides, but despite being one step away from the Bigs, the call up never came until yesterday. Today Sharlon will join the Orioles MLB team.

Cabrera has absolutely destroyed Starter Phil Hughes in his career, - with 6 Bolts in just 43 AB. He and the Tigers take their road act to Target Field again tonight. Last evening they scored 10 runs for the 1st time all season. i would not be surprised to see them turn the feat again tonight. The Tigers are also not overpriced yet as they have struggled most of the year. They are the top stacking option lineup all night.

Tim Lincecum Could Be A Difference Maker For A Rotation In 2016

Tim Lincecum will pitch in front of upwards of 15 to 20 teams on Friday. He has been sidelined since last season due to arthroscopic hip surgery. He has been rehabbing for the last few months, and it looks as if he is finally ready to showcase his talents in front of scouts. There are reports that he is already throwing in the low 90’s, which is great news for the right-handed pitcher. As of right now, some of the reported teams who will be in attendance on Friday include the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Oakland A’s, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, Washington Nationals, and the Baltimore Orioles.

Tampa Bay Rays’ Outfielder, Steven Souza, Makes One Of The Best Catches You Will See All Year

On Wednesday night, Tampa Bay Rays’ outfielder, Steven Souza, made what could be one of the best catches you will see this year. In the 4th inning, Baltimore Orioles’ first baseman, Chris Davis, hit a shot to right field, but Souza wasn’t going to let this ball go for extra bases. He laid out and made an absolutely spectacular catch. Souza was acquired by the Rays in 2014, but he struggled to prove himself in 2015. Luckily for the Rays, Souza has really improved since the start of the 2016 season. He is currently hitting .295 with 5 home runs, 11 RBIs, 10 runs, and a .359 OBP. Not only is his bat impressive, but as you can tell by the video, his glove is pretty impressive as well. Click the link below to see the video:

Bryce Harper And Mike Trout Get All The Attention That Manny Machado Deserves

It is no secret that Bryce Harper and Mike Trout are considered the two best players in fantasy baseball, but Manny Machado deserves to be in that discussion. One of the most discussed questions in fantasy baseball is, “which player is the best?” Prior to 2015, an overwhelming majority would have given that honor to Mike Trout. After a history-making season in 2015, Bryce Harper broke onto the scene and people started to question whether or not he should be considered the best in the business. While Harper and Trout were getting the spotlight, I’m sure Manny Machado was thinking, “well, what about me?” Machado deserves to be in the discussion for one of the best fantasy baseball players after his breakout 2015 season, and his torrid start to 2016. Before discussing Machado, lets take a look at Harper and Trout.
