Daily Matchups for 7/5/2016

Pitcher

STUDS

Carrasco, Price, and MadBum…… All with sketchy match ups.  I’m personally fading all three, if I had to choose one, I’d go Carrasco. He’s kept the Tigers in check with exception of Miggy, but the Tigers can blow up at any time. More of a tourney play.

MID RANGE

Masahiro Tanaka– Whitesox hitting a combined .224 vs him and he’s been pretty reliable this year.

AJ Griffin– Current Sox 9-38 off him and he’s limited the HR’s this year. Sox do appear to be heating up, so there’s some risk but he could pay off nicely,

VALUE

Tim Lincecum- Rays have made a lot of below average pitchers look good this year, they K a bunch vs righties and its in the Trop.  Not high upside here, but 6 innings, 2 ER with 5-6 K’s and the W is a reachable line.  And his price could allow you some big bats.

4th of July

flag-fireworksBy Josh

I love the 4th of July. It is far and away my favorite holiday. The weather is usually nice, BBQs, baseball and fireworks are all things I love and when you put them together it is just great.  On a lot of holidays there is an emphasis on remembering the reason for the holiday and not as much the commercialism that has occurred.

10. Tom Seaver (1967-1986)

tom-seaver_original

George Thomas “Tom” Seaver was nicknamed “Tom Terrific” and “The Franchise.” He pitched from 1967-1986 for 4 total teams in his career.

MLB Stats:

311 Wins

3,640 strikeouts

61 shut outs

2.86 Career ERA.

Teams:

New York Mets (1967-1977)

Cincinnati Reds (1977-1982)

New York Mets (1983)

Chicago White Sox (1984-1986)

Boston Red Sox (1986)

These numbers are amazing and in 1992 Hall of Fame voters thought so as well. Seaver was inducted by the second highest percentage ever at 98.84% of the vote. Seaver and Mike Piazza are the only 2 Mets in the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown so far and Seaver and Gil Hodges are the only 2 Mets players who have had their numbers retired.

Career highlights and awards:

12x All-Star (1967-1973, 1975-1978, 1981)

1969 World Series Champion

3x NL Cy Young Award (1969, 1973, 1975)

NL Rookie of the Year (1967)

3x NL Wins Leader (1969, 1975, 1981)

3x NL ERA Leader (1970, 1971, 1973)

5x NL strikeout leader (1970, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1976)

No-Hitter (06/16/1978)

New York Mets Hall Of Fame

Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame

As you can see, Seaver had an established career and this is why he has made our list at Number 10.

Twins can’t be fixed unless they trade Joe Mauer

Joe Mauer

The Minnesota have lots of issues that need fixing and in spite of their horrendous pitching the very first problem they need to address is Joe Mauer. I know Mauer is making $23 million a year but money is not the issue here. The problem here is that he is playing first base and hitting in one of the top three spots in the batting order while hitting .258 with 26 RBI in 337 plate appearances. Catcher Kurt Suzuki who hits in the bottom of the order is hitting .278 with 25 RBI in just 194 PA’s. I am not trying to show how good Suzuki is, I am trying to show how bad Mauer really is.

BLUE JAYS’ J.A. HAPP: WHO IS THIS GUY?

THE TORONTO BLUE JAYS TOOK A CHANCE ON J.A. HAPP THIS OFFSEASON. IT IS PAYING OFF AS HE IS AMONG THE BEST PITCHERS IN THE AMERICAN LEAGUE.

Think back to what went through your head this past offseason. The Toronto Blue Jays let David Price walk without so much as a Thank You card. Fans were worried about how the club would contend after losing such a force in the rotation. The answer was J.A. Happ. Signed for 3 yrs and $36M, the chorus of “Rogers is Cheap” started to ring once again. Happ is making $10M in 2016 and $13M in the next two. And, the way he is going, Toronto brass is looking pretty smart.
